Traditionally it was believed by many psychologists and scholars that the influences of racial diversity on any group is largely the responsibility of the minority groups. It is the minority members who are expected to bring new perspectives and experiences into the group. This study, however, brings to light a new kind of hypothesis that the white majority is also responsible for the effects of diversity.
Samuel R. Sommers, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology in the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, further believed that such behavior is not only limited to jury decision-making, but that it can also be applied to business, higher education and other institutions that are faced with similar issues.
"Because the study examines group decision-making in a realistic setting, the findings have potential implications for a variety of contexts--from the classroom to the boardroom, or wherever a premium is placed on fact-finding and reaching a good decision," Sommers added. "Diverse groups show a number of advantages and benefits when it comes to this type of decision making."
